What it does

• Requires the department to send an electronic annual report to the legislature and school districts by February 15 each year regarding student academic performance.
• Mandates that reports include information described in AS 14.03.120, progress on accountability provisions, and efforts to assist high schools with accreditation.
• Requires reporting on resources provided for coordinated school improvement activities and staff training.
• Includes data on each district's progress in aligning curriculum with state education performance standards.
• Describes departmental efforts to assist public schools or districts that receive a low performance designation.
• Reports intervention efforts by schools and districts for students not meeting state performance standards.
• Requires reporting the number and percentage of turnover for certificated personnel and superintendents, working conditions, local housing availability, aggregated teacher exit interview data, and recommendations for retention strategies.
• Includes a summary of administrative employee categories with ratios comparing staff numbers to student enrollment and total teaching staff as of October 1 of the previous year.
• Reports progress on implementing reading intervention programs and how in-service days are used for culturally responsive professional development.
• Reports effectiveness and participation rates of the parents as teachers program, including measures of efficiency and effects on school readiness.
• Requires districts to file an annual report with the department that includes goals, a plan to achieve them, measurement methods, and teacher exit interview information.
• Updates duties for the Department of Education regarding supervision, accreditation standards, health and safety regulations, early education programs, correspondence study, private school accreditation, construction plans, vocational training, grants, bus driver training, and disciplinary reporting.
