What it does

• Requires health care providers to notify law enforcement within 14 days after using a sexual assault exam kit to gather evidence.
• Mandates that law enforcement send kits to an accredited lab within 20 days of receiving notification or collecting the kit.
• Sets a deadline for labs to finish serological or DNA testing no later than 120 days after they receive the kit.
• Requires agencies to make a reasonable effort to tell victims when their kit has been tested, usually within two weeks of completion.
• Creates a new tracking system run by the Department of Public Safety to monitor kits from collection until testing is done.
