Excusing High School Students for National Signing Day Events

This law requires public high schools to excuse students from class on specific days when they sign commitment letters for athletic scholarships, college offers, apprenticeships, or military enlistment.

What This Bill Does

  • Requires schools to excuse students who are signing commitment letters during National Signing Day activities related to athletic scholarships, postsecondary school education, university programs, and apprenticeship training.
  • Includes excusing students who sign up for military enlistment as part of these events.
  • Mandates that schools provide meeting space with internet access and seating that does not interfere with regular instruction.
  • Allows guests to attend if local board policies permit it.
  • Gives school principals the power to excuse other students from class so they can watch the event.

R 701

Adopted

Plain English: This amendment requires Alabama public high schools to let students miss class for National Signing Day events where they commit to athletic scholarships, college plans, apprenticeships, or military service.

  • Students must be excused from class if they are signing commitment letters during school hours as part of organized National Signing Day activities.
  • Schools must provide reasonable accommodations for these events, such as meeting space with internet access and seating that does not disrupt other classes.
  • Guests may attend the ceremonies based on local school board rules, and principals have the option to excuse additional students from class to watch.
  • The specific details of what counts as 'reasonable accommodations' beyond meeting space and internet are not fully defined.
  • Local school boards decide their own policies regarding whether guests can attend these events.
YMCCE62-1

R 1211 • Kelley

Adopted

Plain English: This amendment changes the bill to specifically allow public high school students to be excused from class when they accept an athletic scholarship.

  • The text now explicitly includes 'the acceptance of athletic scholarships' as a reason for student absences.
  • The provided amendment text is incomplete and does not show the full sentence or context, so it is unclear if other reasons like college commitments are still included.
  • Because only a small fragment of the bill was shown, we cannot confirm exactly how this change affects the rest of the law.
