Personal Collection of Certain Fossils

This law allows people to collect specific types of fossils for personal use on most state lands without a permit, while setting limits on weight and tools.

What This Bill Does

  • Allows individuals to gather certain plant or invertebrate animal fossils from state land that is not managed by the department as a park or game refuge.
  • Limits collection to a daily total of 25 pounds of specific fossils, 50 pounds of rock containing fossils, or one large fossil over 50 pounds if it is an invertebrate fossil.
  • Requires collectors to use only hand tools without electricity and cause minimal damage to the ground surface.
  • Prohibits selling collected items or using them for research projects intended for museums or public display.
  • Updates state law definitions to clarify which fossils are allowed under this new personal collection rule.

Who It Names or Affects

  • People who want to collect specific types of fossils on Alaska state land
  • The Department managing state lands outside of parks and game refuges
