Driving Rules for Highways

This bill changes rules about which lanes certain heavy vehicles can use on highways.

What This Bill Does

  • Changes when and where heavy trucks and large vehicles must drive in specific lanes on highways based on engineering and traffic investigations.
  • Requires signs to be put up showing which lanes are meant for these types of vehicles if determined by the department or local authority.
  • Limits left lane usage by large vehicles unless they need it for turning, entering/exiting a highway, or continuing their route.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Drivers of heavy trucks and other large vehicles on highways.
  • Local authorities responsible for road signs and traffic rules.

Terms To Know

Declared gross weight
The total weight of a vehicle including its cargo, as stated by the manufacturer or owner.
Pole trailer
A type of trailer that is pulled behind another vehicle and used to transport poles or similar items.

Limits and Unknowns

  • It's unclear how this will be enforced on highways with fewer than three lanes in one direction.
