Purpose

Appropriates
$20,000,000 in FY 2027 from the state General Fund (state GF) to the Department
of Public Safety (DPS) to reimburse costs associated with short-term detention
holds for unauthorized aliens.

Background

DPS is
responsible for creating and coordinating services for use by local law
enforcement agencies in protecting the public safety and for formulating plans
with a view to establish modern services for prevention of crime, apprehension
of violators, training of law enforcement personnel and the promotion of public
safety. DPS consists of four Divisions: 1) Arizona Highway Patrol; 2) Narcotics
Enforcement and Criminal Investigation; 3) Scientific Criminal Analysis; and

alien is an alien who does not have the legal right or authorization under
federal law to work in the United States (

Be it
enacted by the Legislature of the State of Arizona:

Section 1.
Appropriation;
department of public safety; state detention centers

The sum of $20,000,000 is appropriated
from the state general fund in fiscal year 2026-2027 to the department of
public safety to reimburse cities, towns and counties in this state for costs
associated with short-term detention holds for unauthorized aliens.
