Allowing Legal Notices on Websites and in Public Places

This law allows towns to post legal notices online and in public buildings instead of only printing them in newspapers.

What This Bill Does

  • Changes the rule that requires some legal notices to appear in daily newspapers by allowing weekly newspapers as an option.
  • Allows these notices for towns, cities, or boroughs to be posted on their official website and a printed copy at town hall plus two other public spots like libraries instead of using a newspaper.
  • Keeps the same time limits required by law for giving notice.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Towns, cities, and boroughs
  • Newspapers that publish legal ads

Terms To Know

Legal notice
An official announcement about government actions or court cases required by law.
In lieu of
Instead of; using one method to replace another.

Limits and Unknowns

  • This change only applies if the original rule requires a daily newspaper.
  • The law does not shorten the time people must wait after seeing the notice.
  • It is unclear which specific types of legal notices this covers without reading every local statute.
