HOUSE BILL NO. 290
AN ACT TO AMEND TITLE 1 OF THE DELAWARE CODE RELATING TO PUERTO RICO DAY.
WHEREAS,
Delaware has a rich and storied history of those with Puerto Rican heritage being a large part of our culture and society; and
WHEREAS, Delaware has a significant Puerto Rican population, making up approximately 2.5% of the State, with an estimated 30,955 Puerto Rican residents according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey; and
WHEREAS, Puerto Rico, meaning “Rich Port,” is an archipelago in the Caribbean Sea consisting of a main island, 4 smaller islands, and hundreds of cays and islets, spanning approximately 8,870 square kilometers; and
WHEREAS, Puerto Rico’s vibrancy is rooted in more than 500 years of rich history and the blending of Indigenous Taíno, African, and Spanish cultures that continue to shape its identity today; and
WHEREAS, the flag of Puerto Rico, first created in 1895, is a powerful symbol of the Island’s history, culture, and identity.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE:
Section 1. Amend Chapter 6, Title 1 of the Delaware Code by making deletions as shown by strike through and insertions as shown by underline as follows:
§ 611. Puerto Rico Day

June 11 is designated as “Puerto Rico Day” and will be commemorated in this State by appropriate ceremonies.
SYNOPSIS
This Act designates "Puerto Rico Day" as a ceremonial day to be commemorated annually on June 11 in Delaware.
