HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 50

HONORING DELAWARE MOTHERS WHO HAVE LOST A CHILD AS A RESULT OF GUN VIOLENCE.

WHEREAS, 127 people die by guns in Delaware-an average of 1 person killed every 3 days;

WHEREAS, firearms were the second leading cause of death among children and teenagers between the ages of 1-17, from 2018-2022, in Delaware;

WHEREAS, so many people killed in Delaware as a result of gun violence leaves many grieving mothers;

WHEREAS, mothers who have lost children due to gun violence are also victims who have to live everyday with the empty “hole” in their hearts;

WHEREAS, these grieving mothers have the burden of dealing with not only the emotional, but the medical, financial, and legal consequences that gun violence imposes on their families;

WHEREAS, mothers who have lost children due to gun violence many times do not get to see their children grow up, and achieve many life milestones such as graduation, marriage, and raising families of their own;

WHEREAS, no mother should ever have to bury a child who has died as a result of gun violence.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 153

rd

General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that all mothers, throughout the State of Delaware, who have lost a child as a result of gun violence be particularly honored and remembered this coming Mother’s Day, May 11, 2025.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that that the General Assembly encourage expanded efforts to keep Delaware residents properly informed of the grief that comes from losing a child due to gun violence.
