SENATE BILL NO. 317

AN ACT TO AMEND TITLE 1 OF THE DELAWARE CODE RELATING TO VETERANS MONTH.

WHEREAS, the State of Delaware is home to thousands of brave men and women who have honorably served in the United States Armed Forces, defending the freedoms and liberties we hold dear; and

WHEREAS, according to recent data, more than 65,000 veterans reside in Delaware, representing a vital and respected part of our communities; and

WHEREAS, Delaware’s veterans have served across generations in times of war and peace, including World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and the Global War on Terror; and

WHEREAS, these individuals have demonstrated courage, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to this nation, often placing themselves in harm’s way for the benefit of others; and

WHEREAS, many veterans continue their service beyond the military through public service, volunteerism, agriculture, education, and small business leadership throughout Delaware; and

WHEREAS, it is important to recognize not only the service of veterans, but also the sacrifices made by their families, who support them during deployments and beyond; and

WHEREAS, the month of May includes important observances such as Memorial Day, providing an opportunity to reflect and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice while wearing the uniform; and

WHEREAS, the State of Delaware continues to strengthen its commitment to veterans through the work of the Delaware Office of Veterans Services, which provides advocacy, guidance, and assistance to veterans and their families in accessing federal, state, and local benefits and resources.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE:

Section 1. Amend Chapter 6, Title 1 of the Delaware Code by making deletions as shown by strike through and insertions as shown by underline as follows:

§ 611. Veterans Month.

May is known as Veterans Month and is to be commemorated in this State by appropriate ceremonies.

SYNOPSIS

This Act designates the month of May as "Veterans Month" in the State of Delaware.
