SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 118
DESIGNATING OCTOBER 12, 2025, AS "NATIONAL FARMER'S DAY" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.
WHEREAS, National Farmers Day is celebrated annually on October 12 to honor the hard work, dedication, and contributions of farmers across the United States; and
WHEREAS,
agriculture is a cornerstone of Delaware's economy, with over 2,150 farms operating on more than 520,000 acres of land, representing approximately 42% of the state's total land area; and
WHEREAS, Delaware's agricultural industry generates approximately $2.1 billion in cash receipts annually, with broilers (chickens raised for meat) being the state's most valuable agricultural product, followed by corn, soybeans, and chicken eggs; and
WHEREAS, Delaware's farmers are committed to sustainable practices, with 27% of the state's farmland enrolled in the Agricultural Lands Preservation Program, ensuring the long-term viability of agriculture in the state; and
WHEREAS, Delaware leads the nation in preserving farmland, with 15% of its agricultural land permanently preserved, safeguarding the state's agricultural heritage for future generations; and
WHEREAS, Delaware farmers are true environmental stewards of the land, implementing comprehensive nutrient management practices that safeguard soil health, enhance water quality, and support sustainable agriculture moving forward; and
WHEREAS, Delaware's farmers have demonstrated resilience and adaptability, achieving record crop yields in 2024, including an increase in corn production by 6.3 bushels per acre and an increase in soybean production by 2.6 bushels per acre compared to the previous year; and
WHEREAS, Delaware's farmers' markets have experienced significant growth, with total sales reaching an all-time high of $4.46 million in 2024, reflecting the state's strong support for local agriculture; and
WHEREAS, Delaware's agricultural industry supports over 122,000 jobs, contributing approximately $21.7 billion to the state's economy through direct and indirect employment, wages, and taxes.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 153rd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that October 12, 2025, is hereby designated as “National Farmer’s Day” in the State of Delaware.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the General Assembly encourages all Delawareans to recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of farmers to the state's economy, environment, and communities.
