153rd GENERAL ASSEMBLY

SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 148

HONORING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF IRISH AMERICANS IN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION.

WHEREAS, on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1776, the British ended their eleven-month siege of Boston, marking a major early victory in the American Revolutionary War; and

WHEREAS, contributions of Irish Americans in the Continental Army were significant, with many Irish Americans playing major roles, such as Doctor James McHenry and John Fitzgerald, who both served as aides-de-camp to General George Washington; and

WHEREAS, 250 years ago Stephen Moylan, George Washington’s Irish American aide-de-camp, first committed the phrase “United States of America” to paper; and

WHEREAS, eight of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence were Irish Americans, including Thomas McKean and George Read; and

WHEREAS, the first 200 copies of the Declaration of Independence were printed by John Dunlap who emigrated from County Tyrone; and

WHEREAS, the Declaration of Independence first appeared internationally in the Belfast Newsletter in Ireland; and

WHEREAS, efforts to create a republic in the United States inspired generations in Ireland to seek and ultimately secure an Irish republic; and

WHEREAS, the spirit of independence is at the heart of both the United States and the Republic of Ireland.
