SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 182

RECOGNIZING MAY 2026 AS "FOSTER CARE MONTH" IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, the State of Delaware recognizes that foster parents provide a valuable and important support system to some of Delaware’s most vulnerable children and their families; and

WHEREAS, foster families are an integral part of the professional team working to protect and nurture children and strengthen families; and

WHEREAS, foster parents generously devote their homes, time, and families to give children experiencing foster care the love, support, and guidance they need to thrive emotionally, educationally, and socially; and

WHEREAS, as of March 9, 2026, there are 437 children and youth experiencing foster care, and as of March 1, 2026, there are a total of 311 foster homes in the state; and

WHEREAS, children experiencing foster care are resilient young people who deserve stability, dignity, and lives full of hope, opportunity, and love; and

WHEREAS, foster parents require national, state, and community support to effectively care for children and youth who have experienced trauma, including abuse, neglect, or dependency; and

WHEREAS, the month of May provides an annual opportunity to honor the dedication of foster families, uplift the voices of youth with lived experience in foster care, raise public awareness, and encourage community engagement in supporting children and families involved in the foster care system.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 153rd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that the General Assembly hereby recognizes May 2026 as “Foster Care Month” in the State of Delaware.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all Delawareans are encouraged to join in commending foster families and youth experiencing foster care throughout the First State, during this month and throughout the year.
