SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 63
RECOGNIZING MAY 7, 2025, AS “PLASTIC FREE LUNCH DAY” IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.
WHEREAS, middle school students at Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy have taken the initiative to investigate the impacts of plastic waste and microplastics in their communities and schools; and
WHEREAS, inspired by the student-led documentary “Microplastic Madness,” students at Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy have engaged in environmental education, advocacy, and hands-on action to address plastic waste; and
WHEREAS, on April 16, 2025, the student-led Environmental Team at Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy hosted a Lunch Waste Audit Day, where students sorted, counted, and weighed their school’s plastic and food waste to gather data and inform future plastic reduction strategies; and
WHEREAS, Plastic Free Delaware, in collaboration with educators and students, is launching the state’s first Plastic Free Lunch Day on May 7, 2025, encouraging school cafeterias to prepare and serve meals with little to no single-use plastic, and to explore innovative approaches to reducing plastic consumption; and
WHEREAS, Plastic Free Lunch Day offers a unique opportunity to raise awareness about the harmful health and environmental effects of single-use plastic, such as microplastics and toxic chemical exposure, which are associated with cancer, endocrine disruption, and other health risks; and
WHEREAS, Delaware serves nearly 29 million school meals each year, and reducing single-use plastic in school cafeterias presents a major opportunity for systemic change in waste reduction and environmental sustainability; and
WHEREAS, Delaware schools are already transitioning away from expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam trays and similar products, as required by law by July 1, 2025, and Plastic Free Lunch Day aligns with this broader statewide effort; and
WHEREAS, Plastic Free Lunch Day exemplifies student-led civic engagement and environmental stewardship and serves as a model for how individual actions can contribute to long-term, collective impact across communities, schools, and institutions.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 153rd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that May 7, 2025, is hereby designated as “Plastic Free Lunch Day” in the State of Delaware.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the General Assembly commends the students of Maurice Pritchett Sr. Academy and partners such as Plastic Free Delaware for their leadership and commitment to protecting our environment and public health.
SYNOPSIS
This resolution designates May 7, 2025, as “Plastic Free Lunch Day” in Delaware to recognize student-led efforts to reduce plastic waste in schools and promote environmental sustainability.
