SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 20

DESIGNATING MAY 18-24, 2026 AS “NATIONAL MYOPIA AWARENESS WEEK” IN DELAWARE.

WHEREAS, the Delaware School Nurse Association’s (DSNA) Myopia Prevention Campaign is a statewide public health initiative focused on addressing the increasing prevalence of childhood myopia; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated that it approximately 4% of the population, or 13 million people in the United States, are affected by Myopia, highlighting the importance of improved awareness, screening, and prevention; and

WHEREAS, untreated myopia may increase the risk of serious eye disease and visual dysfunction later in life, including retinal complications and vision loss; and

WHEREAS, prevention and early intervention are key to maintaining long-term eye health and protecting the visual future of our children; and

WHEREAS, the DSNA Myopia Prevention Campaign promotes evidence-based prevention strategies, including early identification through routine vision screening, increased outdoor time, healthy screen habits, and awareness of current treatment options; and

WHEREAS, through professional education and community outreach, DSNA empowers school nurses to serve as leaders in myopia prevention while supporting the visual health, academic success, and long-term well-being of students; and

WHEREAS, school nurses conduct vision screenings for all school-aged children and play a critical role in identifying students who require comprehensive eye care; and

WHEREAS, DSNA continues to advocate for Vision to Learn to operate a second mobile eye clinic to provide services and expand access to vision exams and eyeglasses for students in need; and

WHEREAS, increasing public and clinical awareness can help ensure earlier identification of symptoms and improved access to care across Delaware.

NOW, THEREFORE:

BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 153rd General Assembly of the State of Delaware that May 19-24, 2026 is designated “National Myopia Awareness Week” in the State of Delaware.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all Delawareans are encouraged to learn more about myopia and to support awareness of this condition.
