A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
26-21
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
March 4, 2025
To recognize and honor the Friends of Mitchell Park on the occasion of their 20th anniversary
and their outstanding contributions to preserving and enhancing a historic green space in
the District of Columbia.
WHEREAS, Mitchell Park, located in the Sheridan-Kalorama neighborhood, has a rich
history dating back to 1663 when the original 600 acres were deeded to George Calvert, the first
Lord Baltimore;
WHEREAS, in 1918, Elizabeth Mitchell generously donated the property to the District
of Columbia, establishing what would become a cherished community gathering space;
WHEREAS, in 1992, two dedicated community members, Holly Sukenik and Betsy
Santarlasci, began crucial conversations about the park's deterioration, leading to the formation
of the Friends of Mitchell Park;
WHEREAS, the Friends of Mitchell Park was officially established as a 501(c)(3) non-
profit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing this historic green space for the
enjoyment of all District residents;
WHEREAS, through successful partnership with the D.C. Department of Parks and
Recreation, the Friends of Mitchell Park led a comprehensive restoration effort, culminating in
the park's grand reopening on October 31, 2004;
WHEREAS, the Friends of Mitchell Park has overseen the planting of nearly 25,000
trees, shrubs, and flowers, transforming the space into a verdant oasis in the heart of the District;
WHEREAS, the organization hosts beloved community events, including the annual Fall
Fun Day which regularly attracts over 300 neighbors, and the summer films series held every
third Thursday from June to September;

WHEREAS, the Friends of Mitchell Park maintains the historical significance of the site,
which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and contains the foundation of the
historic Holmead-Kall Home dating to the 18th century;
WHEREAS, for 2 decades, this all-volunteer organization has demonstrated exceptional
dedication to providing a safe, beautiful, and well-maintained gathering place for all Sheridan-
Kalorama residents; and
WHEREAS, the Friends of Mitchell Park continues to serve as an exemplary model of
community-led park stewardship in the District of Columbia.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the "Friends of Mitchell Park 20th Anniversary Recognition
Resolution of 2025".
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and celebrates the Friends of
Mitchell Park for 20 years of outstanding service to the community and their tireless dedication
to preserving and enhancing one of the District's most cherished historic green spaces.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
