A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
26-33
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
May 6, 2025
To honor and recognize the American University men’s basketball team on their 2024-2025
season in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (“the NCAA”) and the Patriot
League.
WHEREAS, the American University men’s basketball team experienced a resurgence to
the top of the Patriot League, finishing the regular season with a 19-12 overall record and a 13-5
record in Patriot League play, earning co-Patriot League Regular Season Champion honors;
WHEREAS, Coach Duane Simpkins, in his second season coaching the American
University Eagles (“the Eagles”), led the team to their first regular season championship in 16
years;
WHEREAS, graduate student Matt Rogers led the team in points and three-pointers this
season, finishing his tenure as an Eagle with two Patriot-League First Team recognitions, one
Patriot-League Second Team Recognition, one Patriot League Championship, and as a Patriot
League Tournament MVP;
WHEREAS, Matt Rogers now holds school records, leaving American University as first
all-time in games played, third in games started, fourth in field goals, sixth in career points, and
seventh in rebounds;
WHEREAS, senior Elijah Stephens will graduate American University ranked fifth in
assists, sixth in steals, and twenty-seventh in points scored, becoming the fourth player in
program history to eclipse both 1,000 points and 400 assists;
WHEREAS, sophomore Greg Jones Jr. earned Patriot League All-Defensive Team
honors;
WHEREAS, the Eagles were led by three graduate students and three seniors during the
2024-2025 season;

WHEREAS, the Eagles have shown a commitment to student engagement, demonstrated
by themed games and partnerships with student-led organizations and the DC community;
WHEREAS, the Eagles were supported by the American University Cheer and Dance
Teams, Pep Band, students, staff, and community members throughout the entire season;
WHEREAS, through their collective teamwork, the team set American University season
records for most points scored, three-pointers made, and free-throw percentage;
WHEREAS, the Eagles sold out their arena during Patriot League Tournament play; and
WHEREAS, under Coach Duane Simpkins’s leadership, the American University Eagles
won their first Patriot League title since 2014 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where
their season concluded.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “American University Men’s Basketball Team Recognition
Resolution of 2025”.
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors the
accomplishments of the American University men’s basketball team during the 2024-2025
season.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
