A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
26-37
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
May 6, 2025
To recognize and honor the Burleith Citizens Association on the occasion of its 100th
anniversary and to celebrate its century of dedicated service to the Burleith community
and the District of Columbia.
WHEREAS, the Burleith Citizens Association was established in January 1925 by the
first residents of the Burleith neighborhood to serve and represent their newly developed
community;
WHEREAS, in its earliest years, the Burleith Citizens Association successfully advocated
for essential infrastructure improvements, including exceptional streets, streetlights, sidewalks,
and improved bus service, laying the foundation for a thriving residential community;
WHEREAS, the Burleith Citizens Association has consistently championed educational
excellence, supporting the establishment and enhancement of local schools, including a
community center at Gordon Junior High School, night classes at Western High School (now
Duke Ellington School of the Arts), and the creation of the Georgetown branch of the DC Public
Library in 1935;
WHEREAS, during the Great Depression, the Burleith Citizens Association
demonstrated extraordinary compassion by preparing Christmas baskets for those in need and
allowing unemployed residents to use vacant lots for growing food––establishing a legacy of
community service that continues to this day;
WHEREAS, the Burleith Citizens Association has been instrumental in preserving and
enhancing the neighborhood's natural environment, supporting the development of Glover
Archbold Park, maintaining the community's cherished tree canopy, and promoting
environmental stewardship;

WHEREAS, in 2008, the Burleith Citizens Association established the Burleith
Community Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization that has funded numerous community improvement
projects, including the restoration of historic call boxes, landscaping of Ellington Field, and
preservation of neighborhood landmarks;
WHEREAS, the Burleith Citizens Association continues to foster community
engagement through special interest groups, seasonal events, and its long-running newsletter, the
Burleith Bell, first published in 1926;
WHEREAS, throughout its history, the Burleith Citizens Association has served as an
exemplary model of civic engagement, democratic participation, and community service,
enriching both the Burleith neighborhood and the District of Columbia as a whole; and
WHEREAS, in 2025, the Burleith Citizens Association celebrates its centennial
anniversary, marking 100 years of dedicated service to its community, responsible development,
and civic leadership.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the "Burleith Citizens Association Centennial Recognition Resolution
of 2025".
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and celebrates the Burleith
Citizens Association's century of outstanding service to the District of Columbia and commends
its continued dedication to fostering community engagement, civic participation, and
neighborhood improvement in the Burleith community.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
