A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
26-46
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
June 3, 2025
To declare the month of June, 2025 as “Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Awareness Month” in the
District of Columbia and to recognize the importance of raising awareness of Alzheimer’s
disease and related dementias as a critical public health issue impacting millions of
Americans.
WHEREAS, June is designated as Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Awareness Month by
the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Disease Prevention and Health
Promotion;
WHEREAS, DC Mortality Data 2010-2020 found that Alzheimer’s disease and related
dementias ranked as the 6th leading cause of death in the District, with approximately 13% of
residents 65 and older living with the disease;
WHEREAS, the Alzheimer’s Association estimates that over 15,000 District residents
live with Alzheimer's disease, supported by 15,000 family caregivers;
WHEREAS, over half of District residents have at least one modifiable risk factor for
cognitive decline, with higher rates among Black residents;
WHEREAS, Medicaid costs for Alzheimer's care in DC are estimated to total $146
million in 2025;
WHEREAS, advancements in Alzheimer’s research have led to evidence-based testing to
aid in diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease;
WHEREAS, there are now multiple treatments approved by the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, but they require a diagnosis in
the mild cognitive impairment or early dementia stages;
WHEREAS, access to new diagnostic tools and treatments is critical to ensure DC
residents can benefit from these advancements;

WHEREAS, the District of Columbia Plan on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related
Dementias 2024-2028 identified as its top 2 goals: (1) Increase the proportion of older adults
with subjective cognitive decline who have discussed their symptoms with a provider; and (2)
Increase the proportion of District residents diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related
Dementias receiving social and other support services; and
WHEREAS, the District has invested in the development of BrainHealth.DC.gov, a
comprehensive resource of educational materials, services, and supports for residents
experiencing Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementia and their caregivers.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Awareness Month Ceremonial
Resolution of 2025.”
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes the importance of addressing
Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias as a public health issue and pledges to support efforts
to prevent and treat Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias within the District and declares
June, 2025 as “Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Awareness Month” in the District of Columbia.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
