A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
26-58
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
June 3, 2025
To recognize the history and the importance of WorldPride, to celebrate the efforts of the Capital
Pride Alliance in hosting WorldPride in the District, to commemorate the 50th
anniversary of DC Pride, and to welcome visitors from the greater Washington region,
across the country, and around the world to local festivities.
WHEREAS, WorldPride is an annual international pride event to increase awareness of
and showcase pride in the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ populations around the world, with
different host cities selected each year;
WHEREAS, at the 16th annual conference of InterPride, held in New York City in 1997,
InterPride’s membership voted to establish the inaugural WorldPride which was held in Rome in
2000;
WHEREAS, 2025 marks the 50th Anniversary of Gay Pride Day, the District’s first
official Pride celebration in 1975 which drew about 2,000 people;
WHEREAS, Pride celebrations in the District have become a symbol of the strength and
influence of the local LGBTQIA+ community, leading to the steady growth of the June
celebrations;
WHEREAS, from the early pioneers who laid the foundation for justice to the present-
day advocates who continue to lead with courage and compassion, the District’s LGBTQIA+
community has been a force for change – not only in our city, but across the nation and the
world;
WHEREAS, WorldPride DC is hosted by the Capital Pride Alliance, which through its
stewardship of diverse programming and events, specifically year-round LGBTQIA+ Pride
festivities centered in Washington, DC, and the National Capital Region, serves to celebrate,
educate, support, and inspire multi-faceted LGBTQIA+ communities in order to grow and
preserve their rich history and protect their rights for current and future generations;
WHEREAS, WorldPride DC celebrations will be held in the District from May 17, 2025,
to June 8, 2025;

WHEREAS, Washington, DC, is uniquely positioned as the Nation’s Capital to provide
visibility to the issues that affect the LGBTQIA+ community worldwide;
WHEREAS, through thought-provoking programming and stunning events, WorldPride
DC attendees will be inspired and empowered to use the tools and connections attained to bring
positive change to their own communities;
WHEREAS, Pride in DC is more than a celebration – it is a living tradition of resistance,
joy, remembrance, and hope. It is a call to honor those we have lost, protect those still fighting to
be seen, and build a future where every LGBTQIA+ person is free to live openly and fully;
WHEREAS, WorldPride DC will bring together people from different countries and
backgrounds to speak out in favor of those who seek justice, equity, peace and freedom, and
stand against bigotry, hatred, divisiveness, discrimination, homophobia and transphobia; and
WHEREAS, as the world looks to Washington, DC, for WorldPride 2025, we reaffirm
our city’s unwavering commitment to human rights, to the safety and inclusion of LGBTQIA+
people, and to the belief that love – in all its forms – is worthy of recognition and protection.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “WorldPride DC Recognition Resolution of 2025”.
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors the hard work of
everyone involved in organizing WorldPride 2025, commemorates the 50th anniversary of DC
Pride, and celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
