A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
26-63
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
June 17, 2025
To recognize and honor the Founding Class of Antioch School of Law on the occasion of their
50th Reunion on September 13, 2025, and to commend their enduring contributions to
social justice, public service, and legal education.
WHEREAS, Antioch School of Law was founded in 1972 by Jean Camper Cahn and
Edgar S. Cahn, trailblazing visionaries who designed the blueprint for the Legal Services
Program and committed themselves to educating lawyers dedicated to social justice;
WHEREAS, the founding class of Antioch School of Law graduated in 1975, and
embodied the school’s mission to use law as a catalyst for progressive change, challenging
traditional legal education and expanding access to justice;
WHEREAS, members of the founding class came from diverse personal and professional
backgrounds, engaging in civil rights and anti-poverty efforts, teaching, serving in the military,
and pursuing public interest work, before arriving at Antioch;
WHEREAS, after graduation, these alumni served as legal aid attorneys, public
defenders, government officials, judges, legislators, general counsels, professors, advocates, and
writers across the District of Columbia and 27 states, including work in Native American affairs,
workers’ rights, juvenile justice, and civil rights;
WHEREAS, their accomplishments include founding the Juvenile Rights Project,
authoring landmark consumer protection laws, securing justice for Guantanamo detainees,
winning Fulbright fellowships, training Olympic athletes, and leading legal, civic, and academic
institutions nationwide;

WHEREAS, the founding class's influence reaches beyond the courtroom into
communities and institutions where they led efforts to rebuild neighborhoods, expand affordable
housing, protect vulnerable populations, and inspire new generations of legal advocates;
WHEREAS, their personal journeys reflect lives of profound civic engagement, from
participating in the March on Washington and the Selma to Montgomery marches, to founding
youth development programs, clinics, and charitable initiatives from South Carolina to Tanzania;
WHEREAS, the Antioch School of Law’s legacy lives on through the University of the
District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law, which continues its mission of advancing
legal education grounded in justice and service.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “Antioch School of Law Founding Class Recognition Resolution
of 2025”.
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors the Founding
Class of Antioch School of Law on the 50th anniversary of their graduation, commends their
historic contributions to public interest law, and extends its gratitude for their unwavering
commitment to justice, equity, and community empowerment.
