A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

26-69

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

July 14, 2025

To recognize, honor, and celebrate Mrs. Gladys Williams, a longtime Shaw resident, on the
occasion of her 100th birthday.

WHEREAS, Gladys Lavoe Sanders was born on August 14th, 1925, in Raleigh, North
Carolina, and has been a resident of the District of Columbia for nearly 95 years, since she was
five years old;

WHEREAS, in 1955, Gladys Lavoe Sanders became Gladys Lavoe Williams after
marrying the late Eddie Williams, with whom she traveled the world extensively while Mr.
Williams served in the military;

WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams has witnessed five generations of her family, with three
children, two of whom are deceased and one of whom is still living, three grandchildren, four
great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild;

WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams spent her career selflessly serving the public as a nurse for
over 40 years, working at historical hospitals such as Freedmen’s Hospital in the District and
Jefferson Memorial Hospital, during which she represented her department with excellence and
received multiple awards for her service;

WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams has been active in various church and civic activities,
including serving as an usher at her church and participating in social rights activities such as the
March on Washington with the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.;

WHEREAS, throughout her life, Mrs. Williams has demonstrated in countless ways her
dedication to the welfare of others, earning the respect and affection of people from many
aspects of society and all ages; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Williams has lived through an eventful century of world history while
being a force for good and a stabilizing influence on those around her.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “Gladys Williams 100th Birthday Recognition Resolution of
2025”.
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and celebrates Mrs. Gladys
Williams, as a longtime Shaw resident who has remained a dedicated citizen of the District of
Columbia for the last 95 years, on the occasion of her 100th birthday.

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
