A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

26-71

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

July 14, 2025

To remember, honor, and celebrate the life of Olivia Cadaval.

WHEREAS, Olivia Cadaval was born and raised in Mexico City, immigrating to the
United Stated in 1961 to attend MacMurray College and later settling in Washington, D.C. in
1968, and;

WHEREAS, Ms. Cadaval documented the history of D.C.’s Latino community and
advocated for spaces for Latino and other marginalized communities, and;

WHEREAS, Ms. Cadaval served as the Director for El Centro de Arte, an arts
organization and community space for Latin-American artistic expression that operated for 20
years, and;

WHEREAS, Ms. Cadaval earned a Ph.D. in American Studies and Folklife from the
George Washington University, and;

WHEREAS, Ms. Cadaval served as a cultural liaison for the Smithsonian Folklife
Festival beginning in 1976, she went on to serve as the Curator and Chair of Cultural Research
and Education for the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, where she curated numerous
Smithsonian Folklife Festival programs, and;

WHEREAS, Ms. Cadaval mentored many young students, curators, artists and folklorists
throughout her career and retirement, especially those from underrepresented communities and;

WHEREAS, Ms. Cadaval continued her work in the community in her retirement,
including curating La Esquina, a photo exhibition documenting the Latino community of Mount
Pleasant, and.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, T hat this
resolution may be cited as the “Olivia Cadaval Memorial Recognition Resolution of 2025”.

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes, honors, and remembers and
the life of Ms. Olivia Cadaval.

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
