IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

September 17, 2025

To honor and recognize the McKinley Technical High School Class of 1980 on the occasion of
their 45th reunion and to celebrate their historic achievements in academics, athletics, and
school spirit.

WHEREAS, the McKinley Technical High School Class of 1980 graduated on Friday,
June 13, 1980, at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., marking the commencement of
approximately 650 graduates;

WHEREAS, a high percentage of the Class of 1980 enrolled in college, demonstrating
their academic achievement and commitment to higher education;

WHEREAS, the Penn Center Trade School, located within walking distance of McKinley
Technical High School, offered students the opportunity to earn trade skills and academic credits
prior to graduation, and later in the 1980s merged with McKinley Technical High School to
become an integral part of the school’s programs;

WHEREAS, the McKinley Technical High School Drill Team was recognized as the
number one drill team in the nation from 1978 through 1980, showcasing unmatched precision,
discipline, and performance;

WHEREAS, the McKinley Technical High School Cheerleader Squad earned the
distinction of being the number one cheerleading team in the District of Columbia in 1980,
reflecting their athleticism, spirit, and dedication;

WHEREAS, the school’s homecoming tradition included spirited parades that brought
together students, alumni, and the community to celebrate McKinley’s pride and excellence;

WHEREAS, Ms. Linda Gray, Vice Chair and Committeewoman of the D.C. Democratic
Party, serves as the guest speaker for the Class of 1980’s 45th celebration;

WHEREAS, upon completing her college education, Ms. Gray began her teaching career
at McKinley Technical High School and served as the Coach for the school’s nationally ranked
cheerleading squad, leading them to excellence;

WHEREAS, Ms. Gray has continued to actively support the McKinley Technical High
School Class of 1980 to this day, exemplifying her lasting commitment to the school community.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “Mckinley Technical High School Class of 1980 Recognition
Resolution of 2025”.

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors the McKinley
Technical High School Class of 1980 for their outstanding achievements, enduring school spirit,
and contributions to the community. The Council commends the Class for their legacy of
academic excellence, athletic success, and civic pride, and congratulates them on more than 4
decades of continued fellowship and service to the people of the District of Columbia.

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
