26-76

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

September 17, 2025

To honor and recognize Taylor Townsend for her historic victory in women’s doubles at the
2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open and for her extraordinary achievement of becoming the
first mother in professional tennis history to reach world No. 1 in any discipline.
WHEREAS, Taylor Townsend, born in Chicago, Illinois, turned professional in 2012 and
has since emerged as one of the most accomplished and inspiring athletes in American tennis,
recognized for her powerful left-handed play, aggressive net game, and resilience in overcoming
adversity;
WHEREAS, Taylor Townsend, alongside her partner Katerina Siniaková, captured the
women’s doubles title at the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open, adding to her growing list of
championships and further establishing her as one of the top doubles players in the world;
WHEREAS, this triumph in Washington, D.C. marked not only a tournament victory but
also propelled Taylor Townsend to the WTA world No. 1 doubles ranking, a milestone that made
her the first mother in professional tennis history to achieve a No. 1 ranking in any discipline;
WHEREAS, Taylor Townsend’s victory at the Mubadala Citi DC Open holds special

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “Taylor Townsend Mubadala Citi DC Open Recognition
Resolution of 2025.”
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and honors Taylor Townsend for her
extraordinary athletic achievements and congratulates her on her championship victory at the
Mubadala Citi DC Open. The Council commends her for making history as the first mother to
reach the world No. 1 doubles ranking, applauds her continued leadership as a role model for
athletes everywhere, and celebrates her contributions to the spirit of perseverance, excellence,
and representation in sports.

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
