IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

September 17, 2025

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the American Fazl Mosque and recognize it for its
contributions to the District of Columbia and Greater Washington Metropolitan Area.

WHEREAS, the building on 2141 Leroy Place was purchased by the Ahmadiyya Muslim
Community USA on April 6, 1950, making the American Fazl Mosque, Fazl meaning “Grace”,
the first permanent mosque in Washington, D.C., and the longest serving mosque in the nation's
capital;

WHEREAS, The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, founded in 1889 by Hazrat Mirza
Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian (India), and presently led by his fifth successor, Hazrat Mirza
Masroor Ahmad, is a global Islamic community dedicated to the promotion of peace, justice,
interfaith harmony, and service to humanity;

WHEREAS, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community USA, established in 1920, has been an
integral part of American society, contributing to civic engagement, humanitarian aid, and efforts
to foster religious freedom and understanding;

WHEREAS, historian Richard Brent Turner has described the Ahmadiyya Muslim
Community as unquestionably “one of the most significant movements in the history of Islam in
the United States in the twentieth century, providing as it did the first multiracial model for
American Islam”;

WHEREAS, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community has a long history of supporting local
food banks and conducting nationwide blood drives in partnership with local organizations;
WHEREAS, the American Fazl Mosque serves the public today as a place of worship,
interfaith dialogue and social service; and

WHEREAS, over the past 75 years the congregation of the American Fazl Mosque has
grown throughout the DMV and has established 4 more mosques in the area.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “75th Anniversary of the American Fazl Mosque Ceremonial
Recognition Resolution of 2025”.

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and celebrates the American
Fazl Mosque for its 75 years of commitment to peace, education, and public service, as well as
its commitment to practicing the principles of its motto “Love for All, Hatred for None”, and
welcomes its continued presence and impact in Washington, D.C.

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
