To honor and recognize the 30th Anniversary of the Million Man March, a historic demonstration 13
for unity, atonement, and responsibility that took place on the National Mall in the District of 14
Columbia on October 16, 1995. 15
WHEREAS, on October 16, 1995, thousands of Black men from across the United States 16
gathered peacefully on the National Mall for the Million Man March, one of the largest 17
demonstrations in American history; 18
WHEREAS, the Million Man March was organized chiefly by Minister Louis Farrakhan 19
with the aid of other leaders such as Benjamin Chavis Jr., the National African American 20
Leadership Summit, and other Grassroot organizers and Black Faith Leaders; 21
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Million Man March was to emphasize spiritual renewal, 22
family responsibility, community service, and social justice, inspiriting millions of individuals 23
nationwide to commit to personal and collective uplift; 24
WHEREAS, the District of Columbia served as the host city for this historic gathering, 25
which showcased the power of peaceful assembly and the enduring importance of the nation’s 26
capital as the center of civic expression; 27

WHEREAS, the March generated long-lasting impacts, including increased civic 28
participation, voter registration efforts, and community development initiatives that continue to 29
influence movements for racial and social justice today; 30
WHEREAS, 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Million Man March, providing an 31
opportunity for the District of Colombia to commemorate this defining moment in American 32
history, to reflect on its legacy and to honor the ongoing struggle for equality and justice; and 33
WHEREAS, the Council of the District of Columbia recognizes the Million Man March 34
as a milestone in the continuing pursuit of justice, unity, and empowerment for Black 35
communities in the District and nationwide: 36
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, that this 37
resolution may be cited as the “Million Man March 30th Anniversary Recognition Resolution of 38
2025.” 39
Sec.2. The Council of the District of Columbia honors and recognizes the 30th 40
Anniversary of the Million Man March and commends the legacy of unity, responsibility, and 41
commitment to social justice that it represents. 42
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately. 43
