26-91

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

October 7, 2025

To honor and recognize the 30th Anniversary of the Million Man March, a historic demonstration
for unity, atonement, and responsibility that took place on the National Mall in the District
of Columbia on October 16, 1995.
WHEREAS, on October 16, 1995, thousands of Black men from across the United States
gathered peacefully on the National Mall for the Million Man March, one of the largest
demonstrations in American history;
WHEREAS, the Million Man March was organized chiefly by Minister Louis Farrakhan
with the aid of other leaders such as Benjamin Chavis Jr., the National African American
Leadership Summit, and other Grassroot organizers and Black Faith Leaders;
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Million Man March was to emphasize spiritual renewal,
family responsibility, community service, and social justice, inspiriting millions of individuals
nationwide to commit to personal and collective uplift;
WHEREAS, the District of Columbia served as the host city for this historic gathering,
which showcased the power of peaceful assembly and the enduring importance of the nation’s
capital as the center of civic expression;
WHEREAS, the March generated long-lasting impacts, including increased civic
participation, voter registration efforts, and community development initiatives that continue to
influence movements for racial and social justice today;
WHEREAS, 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Million Man March, providing an
opportunity for the District of Columbia to commemorate this defining moment in American
history, to reflect on its legacy and to honor the ongoing struggle for equality and justice; and
WHEREAS, the Council of the District of Columbia recognizes the Million Man March
as a milestone in the continuing pursuit of justice, unity, and empowerment for Black
communities in the District and nationwide.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “Million Man March 30th Anniversary Recognition Resolution of
2025.”
Sec.2. The Council of the District of Columbia honors and recognizes the 30th
Anniversary of the Million Man March and commends the legacy of unity, responsibility, and
commitment to social justice that it represents.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
