A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
26-114
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
December 2, 2025
To celebrate the official grand opening of the Washington School for Girls' campus expansion at
the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus as part of the school's "Building
Dreams Campaign".
WHEREAS, the Washington School for Girls (WSG) is an independent, tuition-free
Catholic day school serving girls in grades 3 through 8, primarily from historically underserved
communities in southeast D.C.;
WHEREAS, the WSG was founded in 1998 through a collaboration between the Society
of the Holy Child Jesus, the Religious of Jesus and Mary, and the National Council of Negro
Women;
WHEREAS, the WSG's mission is to close educational gaps by providing a rigorous,
culturally responsive academic program alongside holistic support for social, emotional, and
spiritual growth;
WHEREAS, the WSG emphasizes leadership, service, and faith-filled lives, with a
student-teacher ratio of about 9:1 and a focus on literacy, STEM, arts, and character
development;
WHEREAS, the WSG has served over 300 students to date, boasting at 99% high school
graduation rate for alumnae through its Graduate Support Program;
WHEREAS, the WSG operates as an anchor institution at the Town Hall Education Arts
Recreation Campus (THEARC), a 16-acre nonprofit hub in Anacostia that integrates education,
arts, health, and recreation services to revitalize the community;
WHEREAS, the WSG is holding a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on December 9, 2025,
marking the opening of a $25 million campus expansion at THEARC that consists of a 33,000-
square-foot, three-story facility designed to dramatically enhance educational opportunities for
its students;

WHEREAS, ground was broken on this project on May 1, 2024, as part of the school's
"Building Dreams Campaign", a joint fundraising effort with partner organization Building
Bridges Across the River;
WHEREAS, key features of the new building include: 14 spacious classrooms for
expanded enrollment, a multi-purpose cafeteria/auditorium for assemblies and meals, an
expansive library/media lab and a dedicated science lab, a makerspace/STEM lab to foster
innovation, a flexible art/music/dance studio, and outdoor access to green space and THEARC
Farm for experiential learning;
WHEREAS, this project highlights the school's growth from its original modest space at
THEARC to a state-of-the-art anchor for girls' education; and
WHEREAS, this ribbon cutting is a milestone not just for the WSG, but for broader
efforts in educational equity, community development, and empowerment of Black and low-
income girls in the District of Columbia;
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the "Washington School for Girls Expansion Recognition Resolution
of 2025".
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia celebrates the campus expansion at the
Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus and the educational opportunities it represents for
the students at the Washington School for Girls.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
