A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
26-130
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
February 3, 2026
To recognize, honor, and celebrate the life of Mrs. Margaret Johnson on the occasion of her 99th
birthday.
WHEREAS, Mrs. Margaret Johnson was born on January 13, 1927, in Baltimore,
Maryland, and later made Washington, D.C. her home;
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson married Freddie Johnson on September 18, 1954, and in
1969, the couple established roots in the Brookland community in Ward 5 by purchasing their
family home on Newton Street, NE;
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson and her husband raised 4 children — Noel, Karen, Fred, and
Stephen Johnson — and she is the cherished grandmother of five grandchildren and one great-
grandson;
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson has always centered her life around love of family and service
to others, creating a home filled with warmth, celebration, and support, and bringing joy to
holidays, gatherings, and community life;
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson devoted herself as a homemaker while also supporting her
children during their time singing with the National Children’s Choir, formed by Judith St.
Aubin, as they traveled nationally and internationally to Rome, Paris, London, the Vatican, and
the White House to perform for 3 Presidents;
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson also worked in the radiology department at Georgetown
University Hospital and contributed her time supporting a community drug hotline;

WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson’s professional journey included roles with the Center for
Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), Second Genesis, People for the American Way,
and American Visions magazine;
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson embraces lifelong learning, was an avid league bowler, and in
her eighties joined the tap dance program “Seniors on the Move,” performing in retirement
communities and schools in Maryland;
WHEREAS, Mrs. Johnson has remained active in her faith community at St. Anthony of
Padua Catholic Church and St. Anthony Catholic School, and served with the Ladies Auxiliary
Council of the National Shrine Council of the Knights of Columbus, Chapter 4944; and
WHEREAS, on January 13, 2026, Mrs. Johnson celebrated her 99th birthday — a
remarkable milestone rooted in nearly 6 decades of life, service, and community in Ward 5 —
and she stands as the longest-living member of both her maternal and paternal families.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “Margaret Johnson 99th Birthday Recognition Resolution of
2026”.
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia joins the family and friends of Mrs.
Margaret Johnson in wishing her a happy 99th birthday and celebrates her milestone and her
long-standing dedication to the Ward 5 community.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
