A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

26-134

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

March 3, 2026

To recognize, honor, and celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness
Center.

WHEREAS, Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center, opened in 2011, is a cornerstone
of the Ward 1 community, known for its vibrant energy and “bold living” philosophy, serving as
a community hub for our seniors; and

WHEREAS, the heart of the Center’s daily activity is supporting seniors’ health and fitness,
providing exercise classes, specialized fitness programs, health screenings, and support groups ;
and

WHEREAS, the Center’s mission includes ensuring our seniors are well-nourished through
cooking classes, food and nutrition programs, and daily lunch; and

WHEREAS, the Center emphasizes lifelong learning and full social lives through
educational programming, day trips, book clubs, special events, and other daily activities and
programming; and

WHEREAS, the Center uplifts the legacy of its namesake, Bernice Fonteneau, a prominent
community activist in the District recognized for her advocacy on behalf of seniors and children.
Fonteneau, a 1993 D.C. Women’s Hall of Fame inductee, co-founded Tender Loving Care, a group
that worked with infants abandoned at birth and was active with the Capital Children's Museum
and Capital Area Girl Scouts.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, T hat this
resolution may be cited as the “Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center 1 5th Anniversary
Recognition Resolution of 2026”.

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and celebrates the 15 th
anniversary of Bernice Fonteneau Senior Wellness Center and its dedication to helping seniors
take charge of their health, wellness, and social life.

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
