A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION
26-137
IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
March 3, 2026
To recognize, honor, and celebrate the life and career of American basketball player Allen
Iverson.
WHEREAS, Allen Iverson was born on June 7, 1975, in Hampton, Virginia, and was
raised by his mother, Ann Iverson, overcoming significant adversity while growing up in the
Hampton Roads community;
WHEREAS, Allen Iverson distinguished himself as a two-sport star at Bethel High
School, leading both the football and basketball teams to Virginia state championships in his
junior year and earning recognition as the Associated Press Virginia High School Player of the
Year in both sports;
WHEREAS, Allen Iverson continued his academic and athletic career at Georgetown
University in the District of Columbia, where he played under Hall of Fame Coach John
Thompson, Jr., became Big East Rookie of the Year, twice earned Big East Defensive Player of
the Year honors, led the Hoyas to a conference championship, and left Georgetown holding the
school’s all-time record for career scoring average;
WHEREAS, Allen Iverson entered the 1996 NBA Draft after 2 seasons at Georgetown
and was selected first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers, becoming the shortest player ever
drafted with the number one overall pick and going on to earn NBA Rookie of the Year honors
in 1997;
WHEREAS, over the course of a fourteen-season professional career, Allen Iverson
became one of the most dynamic and influential guards in league history, earning the 2001 NBA
Most Valuable Player award, 4 NBA scoring titles, 3 steals titles, 11 NBA All-Star
selections, 2 All-Star Game MVP awards, and 7 All-NBA team selections, while leading
the 76ers to the 2001 NBA Finals;
WHEREAS, Allen Iverson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of
Fame in 2016 and was later named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, cementing his legacy as

one of the greatest players in the history of the game and a cultural icon whose authenticity,
style, and fearless play inspired a generation of athletes and fans;
WHEREAS, Allen Iverson, during his time at Georgetown and throughout his
professional career, has been a source of pride and inspiration for residents of the District of
Columbia, especially young people who see in his story an example of resilience, perseverance,
and the power of second chances;
WHEREAS, Allen Iverson has invested in his hometown community and the broader
Hampton Roads region by supporting youth and families, including partnering with the Boys &
Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula and Reebok to renovate and donate a state-of-the-art
basketball court; provide shoes, backpacks, and school supplies to local children; and support
Bethel High School and youth tournaments in the area;
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth of Virginia has formally recognized Allen Iverson’s
contributions by proclaiming an "Allen Iverson Day," and the City of Newport News has
honored him by designating a portion of 16th Street as "Allen Iverson Way," reflecting his
enduring impact on his home region; and
WHEREAS, Allen Iverson, as a father, mentor, and public figure, has used his platform
and personal story, including both triumphs and setbacks, to encourage young people to pursue
their dreams, stay true to themselves, and give back to their communities.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the "Allen Iverson Ceremonial Resolution of 2026.”
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia honors Allen Iverson for his
extraordinary accomplishments in the game of basketball, his role in elevating Georgetown
University and the District of Columbia on the national sports stage, his enduring cultural
influence, and his ongoing commitment to inspiring and supporting young people in the
communities that shaped him.
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
