A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

26-144

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

March 31, 2026

To remember, acknowledge and condemn the Holocaust and to declare April 14, 2026 as Yom
Ha’Shoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day.

WHEREAS, the Holocaust was a dark period in human history between 1933 and 1945
marked by the systematic persecution and annihilation by Nazi Germany and their collaborators
of 6,000,000 Jews and another 6,000,000 individuals targeted and victimized for their ethnicity,
religious beliefs, disabilities, sexual orientation, political ideology, or nationality;

WHEREAS, it is our moral responsibility to educate future generations about the
Holocaust and its devastating impact on the world, and to work towards creating a society that is
free from prejudice, bigotry, and discrimination;

WHEREAS, April 14, 2026 marks Yom Ha’Shoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day, a
solemn day of reflection and remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust and an opportunity
for us to reaffirm our commitment to human rights and dignity;

WHEREAS, the District of Columbia stands united in its condemnation of all forms of
hatred, prejudice, and discrimination, and remains committed to promoting a culture of respect,
understanding, and acceptance; and

WHEREAS, 3GDC and Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington are
hosting Yom Ha’Shoah Commemorations to honor the lives of those affected and to remember
their courage and strength.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “Holocaust Remembrance Day Recognition Resolution of 2026.”

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes Holocaust Remembrance Day
and its significance in remembering the victims of the Holocaust and promoting the values of
justice, equality, and human dignity.

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
