A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION

26-149

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

May 5, 2026

To recognize and celebrate East City Bookshop, on the occasion of its 10th anniversary, for its
longstanding commitment to the neighborhood and for offering a wide array of books and
events that foster community.

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop was established in 2016 by Laurie Gillman on
Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, in the heart of Capitol Hill;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop is a gathering place for book lovers of all ages that offers
a wide selection curated by knowledgeable book buyers and booksellers who help any customer
find the right titles;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop hosts book clubs, author events, and more to connect
people with books that inspire and bring the community together;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop has staff who know their regulars’ names and offer the
same care and expertise to every visitor;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop holds book drives for local organizations, such as Ward
6 Mutual Aid, and donates a percentage of its sales to the organization;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop books author events in schools for touring authors;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop offers hybrid one-week book fairs for schools, donating
20 percent of sales designated for the school;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop provides teacher wish lists to bring more books into local
classrooms;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop hosts 15 book clubs to bring people together in
conversation over fiction and nonfiction alike, with 4 of the clubs being for children of different
ages;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop regularly hosts events, both in- store and across the
District, to expand dialogue on current events, provide thoughtful conversations with authors, and
inspire readers of all backgrounds;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop continually encourages people to shop local, at both its
own space and other neighborhood small businesses;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop offers more beyond books, including unique greeting
cards, thoughtful gifts, and items for children, friends, parents, and coworkers;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop hosts annual summer reading challenges for both school-
aged children and adult readers;

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop earned a Ward 6 Brickie Award in 2017, and it has been
named Best Indie Bookstore and Best Bookstore by Washington City Paper;

WHEREAS, Laurie Gillman is a book lover who opened her business to serve her
neighbors with new books, filling a need when local stores were closing;

WHEREAS, Laurie Gillman continually employs staff members who are welcomed and
uplifted to share their love of books with the broader community; and

WHEREAS, East City Bookshop continues to be a place for everyone in the community to
find connection and common ground.

RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the “ East City Bookshop 10th Anniversary Recognition Resolution of
2026”.

Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognize s and celebrates East City
Bookshop, on the occasion of its 10th anniversary, for its longstanding commitment to the
neighborhood and for offering a wide array of books and events that foster community.

Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately.
