26-161

IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

May 5, 2026

To congratulate and celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Whittier Elementary
School.

WHEREAS, J.G. Whittier Elementary School, one of the District of Columbia’s oldest
public schools, is celebrating 100 years of academic excellence and service to the Ward 4
community;

WHEREAS, since opening its doors in 1926, Whittier has been a cornerstone of learning,
leadership, and community in Northwest Washington, D.C.;

WHEREAS, the creation of the elementary school was born out of the advocacy of local
Manor Park residents who lobbied the D.C. Schools Superintendent Frank W. Ballou and
Congress to fund a nearby school for neighborhood children to walk to safely;

WHEREAS, a century later, the students, alumni, educators, and families of Whittier
Elementary School continue to make a difference at school and in our community;

WHEREAS, Whittier Elementary School nurtures students to become knowledgeable
contributors to their community through a hands-on approach to inquiry that catapults their
desire to understand their world and pioneer self-exploration discoveries;

WHEREAS, Whittier Elementary School centers academic readiness through robust
project-based learning focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics;

WHEREAS, Whittier Elementary School was awarded the “Enduring Excellence Award”
by EmpowerK12 for consistently meeting Bold Performance Standards across multiple years
through sustained academic growth; and

WHEREAS, the Whittier Elementary School community will mark this anniversary with
a special gala on May 16, 2026 in celebration of its academic legacy and the impact of all those
who have shaped Whittier’s rich history over the past century.
