To recognize and celebrate Georgetown on the 275th anniversary of its founding. 24
WHEREAS, Georgetown was established in 1751 as a port town in the colony of 25
Maryland on land known as the Tahoga Village belonging to the people of Nacotchtank; 26
WHEREAS, Georgetown remained a separate and often self-governing entity with 27
growing commercial traffic and a bustling business sector until it was fully incorporated into the 28
District of Columbia in 1895; 29
WHEREAS, Black Americans and those brought to this country as enslaved people have 30
lived and worked in Georgetown since its founding, at times making up 30-40% of the 31
population, and continue to shape the area’s history and culture including through institutions 32
like Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, the oldest African American congregation in DC.; 33

WHEREAS, the Georgetown Historic District was created in 1950 as the first historic 34
district in Washington and the sixth in the United States; 35
WHEREAS, in 1962, Georgetown was designated as a National Historic Landmark and 36
has since been included in the DC Inventory of Historic Sites and National Register of Historic 37
Places; 38
WHEREAS, Georgetown remains a hub of residential, retail, restaurant, and tourist sites 39
that draws residents and visitors all over the world to experience the neighborhood’s unique 40
charm and vibrant offerings; 41
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, that this 42
resolution may be cited as the “Georgetown 275th Anniversary Recognition Resolution of 2026”. 43
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia recognizes and celebrates Georgetown 44
for its long history and its social, cultural and economic contributions to the District. 45
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 46
the District of Columbia Register. 47
