To recognize and honor Maureen L. Dwyer and the Sitar Arts Center for their contributions to 16
the District of Columbia. 17

WHEREAS, Maureen L. Dwyer served the community at Sitar Arts Center for 27 years, 19
including 15 years as Executive Director, working to ensure Sitar Arts Center serves as a strong 20
community hub for Ward 1 and the District; 21
WHEREAS, Ms. Dwyer helped grow enrollment, expand artistic and workforce 22
partnerships, build coalitions and strengthen community partnerships, and deepen and diversify 23
programming; 24
WHEREAS, under Ms. Dwyer’s leadership Sitar Arts Center has been recognized with 25
several honors and awards, including the 2015 Washington Post Award for Excellence in 26
Nonprofit Management, the 2017 Mayor’s Arts Award, and the National Arts and Humanities 27
Youth Program Award, among others; 28
WHEREAS, Sitar Arts Center advances equitable access to high-quality arts education 29
and workforce development in the visual, performing, and digital arts; 30
WHEREAS, Sitar Arts Center serves up to 900 families each year from all eight wards, 31
removing financial and cultural barriers to arts education and career training; and 32

WHEREAS, Sitar Arts Center provides quality, accessible arts education and supports 33
youth creativity through classes in visual arts, music, drama, dance, digital arts, and creative 34
writing. 35
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, that this 36
resolution may be cited as the “Maureen L. Dwyer Recognition Resolution of 2026”. 37
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia honors and celebrates the Sitar Arts Center 38
and its longtime Executive Director Maureen L. Dwyer for their contributions to the community 39
and arts education in the District of Columbia. 40
Sec. 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon the first date of publication in 41
the District of Columbia Register. 42
