IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
To confirm the reappointment of Kristin Shymoniak to the Commission on African-American
Affairs.
RESOLVED, BY THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, That this
resolution may be cited as the "Commission on African-American Affairs Kristin Shymoniak
Confirmation Resolution of 2025".
Sec. 2. The Council of the District of Columbia confirms the reappointment of:

as a public member of the Commission on African-American Affairs, pursuant to section 2 of the
Commission on African-American Affairs Establishment Act of 2012, effective March 14, 2012
(D.C. Law 19-106; D .C . Official Code§ 3-1441), for a term to end July 8, 2028.
Sec. 3. The Council of the District of Columbia shall transmit a copy of this resolution,
upon its adoption, to the nominee and to the Office of the Mayor.
Sec. 4. This resolution shall take effect immediately.

ristin Shymoniak is the immediate past President and previous
Community Service Programs Chair for the Thursday Network, the
Young Professionals Auxiliary of the Greater Washington Urban League.
She has dedicated her life to serving her community. Some of her
community activism efforts include being a board member for Black
Millennials 4 Flint, a grassroots, civil-rights and environmental justice
organization; the Darrelle Revis Foundation, a non- profit striving to end
childhood hunger; and Heirs of Promise, a non -profit gearing effort to
find permanent homes for displaced youth throughout Jamaica.
Ms. Shymoniak has also served the community as a coordinator for the
Empowerment Academy, an after -school program for middle school
students in the Greater Washington area that focuses on empowering students through lessons on
health, education, activism, and social justice; developing and spearheading a food pantry to feed
local families; and coordinating a male mentoring program for at risk youth in Rockville,
Maryland. She has also coordinated the Young Blacks Give Back which is a month-long
community service and fundraising initiative for young Black professionals and high school
students. Ms. Shymoniak has taught in schools throughout Montego Bay, Jamaica and conducted
professional development training for school and government personnel on how to implement best
practices when working with children with special needs.
In addition to being a community leader, Ms. Shymoniak is an educational advocate. She is
currently a Student Support Coordinator in Arlington, Virginia. Kristin is the 2017 AASA and The
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation's Women in School Leadership Award recipient and 2019
National Urban League Emerging Leaders Fellow. Kristin is a world changer and has a heart for
the community and future generations.
A Ward 8 resident, Ms. Shymoniak earned her Master of Education in Special Education with a
specialization in autism from the University of Pittsburgh.
