M
r. Dennis G. Smith III is a Professional Licensed Barber Instructor.
Mr. Smith started his barbering career at the age of 13 when his mother
first showed him how to cut his own hair. After several years of floating
from one career path to another he came to a realization with the advice
of a lifelong friend who suggested that he take up barbering as a
profession. With that advice and encouragement, he enrolled in the
Bennett Career Institute, where he studied barbering and then later went
back to get his instructor credentials as well.
After graduating and getting his barber license, Mr. Smith worked at the
local Southeast DC barber shop, PJ’s Barbers and Stylist , honing his
craft. During his tenure at PJ’s, Mr. Smith was featured in the
Washington Post Magazine in an article about the revitalization of the community in which he
worked. After leaving PJ’s he earned a contract position with the United States Marine Corps at
Marine Barracks 1 located in the Eastern Market neighborhood.
As a contract barber with the Marine Corps, he was responsible for cutting the hair of t he
President’s Own Band and the United States Marine Corps Drum and Bugle Corps. He was also
responsible for styling marines for advertisements and photo shoots. Mr. Smith then worked as a
barber instructor at Bennett Career Institute. During his tenure at Bennett, he became such an
integral part of the institute that he was promoted to the position of Chief Operating Officer of the
C. Alan Systems, an associated organization.
A Ward 1 resident, Mr. Smith earned his barber and barber instructor credentials from the Bennett
Career Institute.
