Privacy Rules for Code Inspector Body Camera Videos

This bill makes body camera videos from code inspectors private if they show the inside of homes, health care facilities, or other places where people expect privacy, but allows specific people and courts to see them under certain rules.

What This Bill Does

  • Makes video recordings confidential when taken inside a home, a facility offering health care, mental health care, or social services, or in any place a reasonable person would expect to be private.
  • Requires local governments to keep these videos for at least 90 days before deleting them.
  • Allows the person recorded and their personal representative to request copies of parts that show them.
  • Lets courts order the release of videos if they decide it is necessary after considering factors like safety, legal needs, and privacy.
  • Sets an end date for this rule on October 2, 2031, unless lawmakers renew it before then.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Code inspectors who wear body cameras while doing their official work
  • Local governments that store and manage these video recordings
  • People whose homes or private spaces are recorded by the cameras
