Food Waste Reduction Act

This bill requires Florida's Department of Education to develop a policy for reducing food waste in K-12 schools and mandates school districts to adopt this policy by specific deadlines.

What This Bill Does

  • Creates a new law that needs the Department of Education to make rules about how schools can reduce wasted food.
  • Requires at least one-quarter of Florida's school districts to follow these rules starting in the 2027-2028 school year.
  • By the start of the 2029-2030 school year, all school districts must be following the new waste reduction rules.
  • Schools need to work with local food banks or nonprofits to give away leftover edible cafeteria food and compost organic waste.
  • Schools should set up a system for sorting cafeteria trash.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Florida's Department of Education
  • K-12 school districts in Florida

Terms To Know

Composting
A process where organic waste like food scraps is broken down into a soil-like material that can be used to grow plants.
Single-use plastics
Plastic items designed for one-time use, such as straws or plastic bags.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The bill does not specify how the Department of Education will fund these initiatives.
  • It is unclear if all school districts will have access to local nonprofits or food banks that can help with redistributing edible cafeteria food and composting organic waste.
