Veterinary Prescription Disclosure

This bill requires veterinarians to inform clients about their right to receive a written prescription for pet medications that can be filled at any pharmacy or at the veterinary clinic.

What This Bill Does

  • Requires veterinarians and authorized staff members to tell clients they have the option to receive a written prescription for pet medication from any pharmacy or fill it at the veterinary establishment.
  • Specifies that this information must be given verbally during in-person consultations or electronically if using telehealth services.
  • Recommends that clients sign an acknowledgment form stating they understand their options, which should then be included in the pet's medical records.
  • Requires veterinary clinics to display a clear sign near checkout areas informing clients about their prescription rights.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Veterinarians and authorized staff members
  • Pet owners who receive prescriptions for their pets

Terms To Know

written prescription
A paper or electronic document that can be given to a pharmacy of the client’s choice.

Limits and Unknowns

  • The law does not apply if immediate dispensing is necessary for life preservation or in cases involving controlled substances regulated by federal or state laws.
  • It is unclear how this will affect veterinary clinics that do not currently offer prescription services to outside pharmacies.
