Rules for Retirees Working in Certain Positions

This bill allows retirees to work without rejoining the Employees' Retirement System if they are employed as school resource officers, investigators, or other specific positions identified by state departments.

What This Bill Does

  • Allows retirees to be hired for certain jobs without having to join the retirement system again and without losing their benefits.
  • Requires that retirees who work as school resource officers or investigators must not have worked for the government within a year before starting this new job.
  • Requires employers of these retirees to pay into the pension fund based on the retiree's salary.
  • Asks human resources directors to report each year about how many retired people are working in specific roles.

Who It Names or Affects

  • Retirees who want to work as school resource officers or investigators.
  • Schools and government agencies that hire retirees for these positions.
  • Human resources departments of the state and counties.

Terms To Know

A system where workers save money during their career to support them after they stop working.
School Resource Officer

Limits and Unknowns

  • Requires the Director of Human Resources to include details on the employment of retirants as school resource officers or investigators in their annual reports to the Legislature.
