HOUSE RESOLUTION
URGING ALL BUSINESS AND COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS
OPERATING ON Department of Hawaiian Home lands TO DISPLAY A PORTRAIT OF THE
HONORABLE PRINCE JONAH KŪHIŌ KALANIANAOLE IN A VISIBLE AND PROMINENT
LOCATION

WHEREAS, every
year on March 26 the state honors the life of Prince Jonah Kūhiō
Kalaniana�ole and his many accomplishments in service of his people and the
Hawaiian Islands; and
����
WHEREAS, Prince
Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana�ole lived a remarkable life, born to High Chief
David Kahalepouli Pi�ikoi and Princess Kinoiki Kekaulike, the youngest daughter
of Kaumuali�i, the last King of Kaua�i; and
����
WHEREAS, at
the young age of only thirteen years old, he was named a Prince by a royal
proclamation from his Uncle, King Kalakaua; and
����
WHEREAS, in
1902 Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana�ole was selected to serve as the
Territory of Hawaii's non-voting delegate; and
����
WHEREAS, some
of Prince Kūhiō's most significant accomplishments include the
establishment of Hawaii Volcanoes Nation Park, the appropriation of $27 million
for the dredging and construction of Pearl Harbor, the establishment of
Hawaiian civic clubs, the construction of a hospital at the Kaluapapa
Settlement for lepers, and the sponsorship of the first bill for Hawaii's
statehood in 1919; and

WHEREAS, his
most significant accomplishment was spearheading the passage of the Hawaiian
Homes Commission Act in 1921 to provide homesteads for Native Hawaiians; and
����
WHEREAS, the Hawaiian
Homes Commission Act set aside 200,000 acres of land for Native Hawaiians as a
form of rehabilitation after the annexation and seizure of land following the
overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom in 1893; and
����
WHEREAS,
Prince Kūhiō's legacy lives on through the Department of Hawaiian
Home Lands, which is responsible for 203,981 acres of trust lands, 10,045
homestead leases, and 47,068 lease applications by 29,451 Native Hawaiian
beneficiaries; and
����
WHEREAS, it
is crucial that those operating on Department of Hawaiian Home Lands honor and
memorialize the life and legacy of the honorable Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaole;
now, therefore,
����
BE IT
RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the Thirty-third Legislature of the
State of Hawaii, Regular Session of 2026, all business and commercial
establishments operating on Department of Hawaiian Home Lands are urged to
display a portrait of the honorable Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaole
in a visible and prominent location; and

BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED that certified copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the
Director of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and each member of the
Hawaiian Homes Commission.
