HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3
Assembly pays honor and respect to the truly great individuals
4
who have served our country and State and, in doing so, have
5
made the ultimate sacrifice; and

6

WHEREAS, Chief Arthur L. Weston of the Rockton Police
7
Department responded to a burglary-in-progress call on October
8
27, 1977, locating the suspect in an upstairs bedroom; after
9
an intense struggle, he was able to place the suspect into
10
custody; as he was transporting the suspect to jail, he began
11
to experience chest pains and called for backup; he was taken
12
to a local hospital, where he died approximately one hour
13
later; and

14

WHEREAS, Chief Weston was born to Leo and Dorothy Weston
15
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on February 1, 1925; he graduated from
16
West High School in 1943; he served in the U.S. Army during
17
World War II; he married Marion J. Peck on August 21, 1947; and

18

WHEREAS, Chief Weston started his career in law
19
enforcement as a patrolman for the Loves Park Police
20
Department; he was the former police chief and organizer of
21
the Rock Valley College Security Force; he also served as
22
police chief in Byron and Roscoe as well as deputy coroner for

Winnebago County and deputy of the Winnebago County Sheriff's
2
Department; and

WHEREAS, Chief Weston was a proud member of the Illinois
4
Police Association, the Rockton Rotary Club, and the Rockton
5
American Legion; and

6

WHEREAS, Chief Weston was a loving husband and father to
7
his wife and his five children; and

8

WHEREAS, At the time of his passing, Chief Weston was
9
survived by his wife, Marion Weston, and his children, Cindy
10
Gau, Vickey Roberts, Debbie Pasch, Wanda Vertterlli, and
11
William Weston; and

12

WHEREAS, Chief Weston gave his life in the line of duty,
13
and his service to and sacrifice for the people of Illinois
14
should never be forgotten; therefore, be it

15

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
16
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
17
SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate the section of
18
Illinois Route 2 in Rockton as the "Chief Arthur L. Weston
19
Memorial Highway"; and be it further

20

RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation

is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
2
State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
3
giving notice of the name "Chief Arthur L. Weston Memorial
4
Highway"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
6
presented to the family of Chief Weston and the Secretary of
7
the Illinois Department of Transportation.
