HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Every day, 125 people in the United States are
3
killed by gun violence, and more than 260 people are shot and
4
wounded, with an average of more than 19,000 gun homicides
5
every year; and

6

WHEREAS, People in the United States are 26 times more
7
likely to die by gun homicide than people in other high-income
8
countries; and

9

WHEREAS, Protecting public safety in the communities they
10
serve is among a state lawmaker's highest responsibilities;
11
and

12

WHEREAS, Support for the Second Amendment rights of
13
law-abiding citizens goes together with keeping guns away from
14
those who are a danger to themselves or others; and

15

WHEREAS, Gun violence prevention is more important than
16
ever as we see gun violence continue to impact communities
17
across the country; and

18

WHEREAS, In January 2013, Hadiya Pendleton was tragically
19
shot and killed at age 15, and on June 6, 2025, to recognize
20
her 28th birthday, June 2, 1997, people across the United

States will recognize National Gun Violence Awareness Day and
2
wear orange in tribute to Hadiya Pendleton and other victims
3
of gun violence and the loved ones of those victims; and

4

WHEREAS, This idea was inspired by a group of Hadiya
5
Pendleton's friends who asked their classmates to commemorate
6
her life by wearing orange; they chose this color because
7
hunters wear orange to announce themselves to other hunters
8
when out in the woods, and orange is a color that symbolizes
9
the value of human life; and

10

WHEREAS, Anyone can join this campaign by pledging to wear
11
orange on June 6th, the first Friday in June 2025, to help
12
raise awareness about gun violence; and

13

WHEREAS, By wearing orange on June 6, 2025, people across
14
the United States will raise awareness about gun violence and
15
honor the lives of gun violence victims and survivors; and

16

WHEREAS, A commitment to reduce gun violence and a pledge
17
to do all we can to keep firearms out of the hands of people
18
who should not have access to them and encourage responsible
19
gun ownership will help keep our families and communities
20
safe; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE

HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that

we declare June 6, 2025 as Gun Violence Awareness Day in the
3
State of Illinois, and we encourage all citizens to support
4
their communities' efforts to prevent the tragic effects of
5
gun violence and to honor and value human lives.
