HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives wish to congratulate Derrick Martell Rose on
4
the retirement of his jersey by the Chicago Bulls on January
5
24, 2026, an honor reserved for the most iconic figures in the
6
history of one of the world's most renowned sports franchises;
7
and

8

WHEREAS, Derrick Rose was born in Chicago on October 4,
9
1988, and he was raised on the South Side of Chicago, where his
10
journey from neighborhood courts and Chicago Public Schools to
11
international basketball stardom became a powerful symbol of
12
perseverance, discipline, and possibility for young people
13
across this State; and

14

WHEREAS, Derrick Rose attended Beasley Academic Center,
15
where he first developed the foundation of his academic and
16
athletic life, before continuing his education and basketball
17
career at Simeon Career Academy, which hosts one of Chicago's
18
most storied basketball programs; and

19

WHEREAS, At Simeon Career Academy, Derrick Rose led his
20
team to a Chicago Public League championship and emerged as
21
one of the nation's premier high school basketball players,
22
exemplifying leadership, humility, and competitive excellence

while representing his school and community with distinction;

and

WHEREAS, After a standout collegiate season at the
4
University of Memphis, Derrick Rose was selected first overall
5
in the 2008 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, returning home to
6
represent his city at the highest level of professional
7
basketball; and

8

WHEREAS, In 2011, at just 22 years old, Derrick Rose
9
became the youngest player in NBA history to be named the
10
league's Most Valuable Player, leading the Chicago Bulls to
11
the best regular-season record in the NBA and restoring
12
national prominence to the franchise; and

13

WHEREAS, During his career, Derrick Rose was named a
14
three-time NBA All-Star, an All-NBA First Team selection pick,
15
and the 2009 NBA Rookie of the Year, earning league-wide
16
respect for his electrifying style of play, quiet leadership,
17
and unwavering work ethic; and

18

WHEREAS, Despite enduring significant injuries that
19
altered the trajectory of his career, Derrick Rose
20
demonstrated extraordinary resilience and character,
21
continuing to compete at the highest level of professional
22
basketball and redefining success through perseverance,

adaptability, and grace; and

WHEREAS, Beyond his accomplishments on the court, Derrick

Rose has remained deeply connected to the City of Chicago,
4
using his platform to support youth, education, and community
5
development, and he has continued to serve as an enduring
6
inspiration to generations of Chicagoans; and

7

WHEREAS, The retirement of Derrick Rose's jersey
8
represents not only athletic excellence but also the enduring
9
bond between a city and one of its own, a Chicago Public
10
Schools graduate who carried the values of his community with
11
him wherever he played; therefore, be it

12

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14
we congratulate Derrick Martell Rose on the retirement of his
15
jersey by the Chicago Bulls in recognition of his remarkable
16
life and career, and we thank him for his lasting
17
contributions to the City of Chicago, the State of Illinois,
18
and the game of basketball; and be it further

19

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20
presented to Derrick Rose as an expression of our esteem and
21
admiration.
