HOUSE RESOLUTION

2

WHEREAS, The ability to read is fundamental to an
3
individual's success and their ability to take part in our
4
democracy as a responsible citizen; and

5

WHEREAS, According to 2022 data from the National
6
Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), one third of Illinois
7
children are reading below their basic grade level; and

8

WHEREAS, A study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation found
9
that third graders that do not read proficiently are four
10
times more likely to drop out of high school, and low-income
11
students that do not read proficiently are six times more
12
likely to drop out of high school; and

13

WHEREAS, Students that cannot read proficiently experience
14
difficulty in every school subject and find it hard to succeed
15
academically; and

16

WHEREAS, Students who cannot read proficiently are not
17
well prepared for life after school; and

18

WHEREAS, Parents are indispensable in the education of
19
their children, and the habits that parents model and the
20
passions they instill are vital to a child's development;

therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4
we declare the week of May 3 through May 9, 2026 as Read with
5
Your Child Week in the State of Illinois; and be it further

6

RESOLVED, That we encourage all Illinois schools to
7
promote Read with Your Child Week with appropriate activities;
8
and be it further

9

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10
presented to Dr. Tony Sanders, the State Superintendent of
11
Education.
