HOUSE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Joseph
4
A. Angotti of Monmouth, who passed away on January 25, 2026;
5
and
6
WHEREAS, Joseph Angotti was born in Gary, Indiana to Art
7
A. and Pauline (Janott) Angotti on December 14, 1938; he spent
8
time working in his family's bakery before attending Indiana
9
University, where he earned a bachelor's and master's degree;
10
he also served in the United States Army; he married Karen
11
(Bowman) Angotti in Monmouth on December 28, 1962; and
12
WHEREAS, Joseph Angotti began his prolific career in
13
journalism in 1962 at WHAS-TV in Louisville, eventually moving
14
to WMAQ-TV in Chicago in 1966; he became a network producer for
15
NBC in 1968, later serving as the executive producer of the
16
weekend edition of NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw; he was
17
also the executive producer of the weeknight newscast with
18
John Chancellor from 1977 to 1980 and was eventually promoted
19
to senior vice president of News Europe, covering major world
20
events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the Tiananmen
21
Square massacre; and
22
WHEREAS, Joseph Angotti left NBC in 1992 to form his own

production company, which created the series "From Marx to
2
Markets" for Eastern Europe; and
3
WHEREAS, Joseph Angotti was a professor and communication
4
studies chair at the University of Miami School of
5
Communication from 1993 to 1998, where he taught broadcast
6
journalism at both the undergraduate and graduate level; he
7
was also the founding director of the Center for the
8
Advancement of Modern Media; and
9
WHEREAS, Joseph Angotti, after his career in the media,
10
became a professor and chair of the broadcast program at
11
Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in 1999,
12
where he remained for six years; he also was the founder and
13
faculty advisor of the Northwestern News Network, which served
14
Evanston and Chicago television stations with weekly news
15
reports; and
16
WHEREAS, Joseph Angotti began teaching journalism at
17
Monmouth College in 2005 after leaving Northwestern
18
University, and in the same year, he and his wife, Karen,
19
founded the Rainbow Riders Therapeutic Riding Center, a center
20
for equine-assisted therapy for special needs children and
21
others; and
22
WHEREAS, Joseph Angotti was inducted into the Indiana

University School of Journalism Hall of Fame in 2007; and
2
WHEREAS, Joseph Angotti was preceded in death by his
3
parents; his son, Fr. Joseph Angotti Jr.; his sister, Phyllis
4
Parker; and his brother, Arthur Angotti; and
5
WHEREAS, Joseph Angotti is survived by his wife, Karen;
6
his sons, Mark and Andrew (Kim) Angotti; his grandchildren,
7
Jessica Magana and Nick Sparks; and his sisters-in-law,
8
Barbara Angotti, and Sally and Mary Ann Bowman; therefore, be
9
it
10
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
11
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
12
we mourn the passing of Joseph A. Angotti and extend our
13
sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
14
and loved him; and be it further
15
RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16
presented to the family of Joseph A. Angotti as an expression
17
of our deepest sympathy.
