HOUSE RESOLUTION
2
WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3
Representatives wish to congratulate Shriners Hospitals for
4
Children - Chicago, more commonly known as Shriners Children's
5
Chicago, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, marking a
6
century of helping thousands of children while solidifying a
7
reputation for finding answers and providing hope; and
8
WHEREAS, On March 20, 1926, Shriners Children's Chicago
9
opened amidst a raging polio epidemic and tuberculosis of the
10
bone causing many deformities, leaving thousands of children
11
from Illinois and the Midwest in need of medical care that was
12
not available to them; and
13
WHEREAS, Shriners Children's Chicago began meeting this
14
demonstrated medical need, only accepting patients of families
15
who could not afford to pay for orthopedic care; and
16
WHEREAS, Shriners Children's Chicago continues to this day
17
to provide care regardless of families' ability to pay, caring
18
for children with insurance, without insurance, and on
19
Medicaid, thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters;
20
and
21
WHEREAS, Shriners Children's Chicago serves as a pediatric

specialty hospital on Chicago's Far West Side, and it has made
2
an indelible mark on American healthcare, having led the
3
nation in establishing orthopedic medical residency programs
4
to train future pediatric doctors, and has provided remarkable
5
breakthroughs in care, including the first surgically
6
successful treatment for osteogenesis imperfecta, a
7
centuries-old brittle bone condition; and
8
WHEREAS, Shriners Children's Chicago further provides
9
important pediatric-focused research in spine and spinal cord
10
injuries, craniofacial and cleft palates, and pediatric
11
orthopedic bone and joint conditions; and
12
WHEREAS, Shriners Children's Chicago has remained
13
steadfast in advancing its threefold mission of outstanding
14
clinical care, medical education, and research, and as part of
15
an international healthcare network, it continues to improve
16
the lives of more children with the best care in the right
17
places; therefore, be it
18
RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
19
HUNDRED FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
20
we congratulate Shriners Hospitals for Children - Chicago,
21
more commonly known as Shriners Children's Chicago, on
22
celebrating its 100th anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we commend Shriners Children's Chicago for
2
its meaningful role in the history of healthcare in Illinois
3
and its continued commitment to health and well-being of the
4
children of Illinois.
